Georgian students claimed four medals at the high-profile European Junior Olympiad in Informatics as they finished among three highest-scoring teams at the tournament that concluded this week in Sofia.

Young competitors of the team Nikoloz Birkadze, Teimuraz Toloraia, Ioane Kapanadze and Giorgi Kobakhia emerged among prize-winners of the event after dive days of contest on Tuesday.

Birkadze received the highest honour with the gold medal and the title of the European Champion after he finished with 504 points following eight rounds of varying disciplines.

Toloraia and Kapanadze added silver medals to the team score while Kobakhia contributed a bronze, meaning Georgia finished the olympiad among three top teams.

The event featured 22 leading teams of the continent and marked its maiden edition in Bulgaria's capital from September 7-13.

Launched to "encourage the interest of young children in [information technology] and to stimulate competitive software development in Europe", the olympiad drew some of the brightest talent of the IT field.

A total of 8 gold, 14 silver and 22 bronze medals were handed to participants who tested their programming skills at the St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University.

The results of the Georgian students follows the recent success of the country's teams at international maths and informatics tournaments.

In July, the Georgian team scored the country’s highest-ever result at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Rio de Janeiro by claiming six medals at the competition.

The same month three students from the country scored three medals at the Central European Olympiad in Informatics in Ljubljana.

The medal-winning young competitors were honoured for their achievement in a reception hosted by Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili last month.
