Ubisa monastery complex in the western Georgian region of Imereti, which is distinguished by its unique wall painting, will welcome new tourist infrastructure thanks to local and foreign donors.

An information centre, parking area, a road to the monastery and other constructions are planned on the monastery’s territory thanks to the financial support of Georgia’s Municipal Development Fund, the World Bank and Georgia’s government.

The cost of the project is more than 2 million GEL.

Apart from arranging the tourist infrastructure the monastery complex will also be restored.

Georgia’s Ministry of Infrastructure says the tourist infrastructure will benefit the local population as the number of tourists will increase there.

Based on the inscription on the wall the main monastery and the tower in Ubisa were built in 1141.

The wall painting of the monastery dates back to the 14th century by famous painter, Damien.
