The musical creations of a Georgian composer are echoing through one of New York’s greatest concert halls today.
Pieces by Georgian composer and pianist George Oakley are being performed today at the Steinway Hall in New York by five international musicians, including two Georgian pianists Tamar Mikeladze and Inga Kashibadze.
A native of Tbilisi, Oakley began playing the piano at the age of eight.
In 2001 he received a full scholarship to participate in the Piano Summer Festival at New Paltz, United States. That same year, Oakley was the top prize winner at the Flier International Piano Competition.
Oakley was commissioned to write a cycle of songs for soprano and piano, based on Shakespeare's sonnets.
In 2012, he presented a world premiere concert at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall where his recent work, including a concerto for piano, orchestra and chorus, were performed.
