More than 2,000 Georgians who served in World War II are being offered a one-time financial bonus in recognition of their service to their homeland.

At a Governmental meeting today, lawmakers agreed to offer 1,800 war veterans and 500 non-commissioned citizens who served as a medic, nurse or other role during WWII with a one-off sum of 1,000 GEL to mark the 70th anniversary of the Day of Victory over Fascism and the end of WWII.

Government Administration head Maia Tskitishvili said the Government would allocate about 2 million GEL for the cause.

"For their outstanding contribution to our history, the Georgian Government decided to gift 1,000 GEL financial aid to the veterans of WWII. We have 1800 war veterans and 500 citizens who lost breadwinners,” she said.

"Last year the assistance we provided was 400 GEL for veterans and 200 GEL for citizens left without support; while in previous years the veterans’ assistance was only 200 GEL,” she said.
