The discovery of an explosive device has caused disruption at a Tbilisi school this morning.

Students and teachers at Tbilisi #207 Public School were evacuated from the school building after an unexploded grenade was found in the school yard.

Bomb specialists were called to the scene and have since removed the explosive device from the school grounds.

Policemen are also at the site and announced the grenade had been defused and the situation was safe and under control. No one was injured in the incident.

The school is located in the Gldani-Nadzaladevi district in the western part of the capital.

School director Zurab Chkhaidze said a member of staff saw a person acting suspiciously this morning near where the grenade was found.

Chkhaidze said the school’s resource officer saw an unidentified person place the explosive device on the ground then quickly leave the area. After this the resource officer checked the scene and discovered the hand grenade.

"About 50-60 metres away from the school the school resource officer found a grenade.”

"He saw a suspicious person put some items near the school. When this person left, the resource officer discovered a F1-type hand grenade at the place,” said Chkhaidze.

"After this, policemen and demining specialists thoroughly inspected the area and everything was found to be safe and secure.”

Afternoon lessons will resume for the second part of the day, said the school director.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs has already launched an investigation into the incident.
