Travellers scheduled to fly between Georgia and Turkey today are facing lengthy delays.
Bad weather at the Turkish capital Istanbul has affected inbound flights at the country’s main airport including flights from Tbilisi, Georgia.
Currently, almost all flight movement (inbound and outbound) at Istanbul Ataturk Airport have been delayed or cancelled due to poor weather.
Official airline information stated today’s scheduled flights from Tbilisi to Istanbul had been cancelled.
Furthermore, flights coming into Tbilisi from Istanbul had also been delayed or cancelled.
Travellers have been stuck in Istanbul for many hours and among them are Georgia’s Oscar hopefuls – the crew of Estonian-Georgian movie Tangerines, who are heading to attended the Academy Awards Ceremony to be held on February 22nd.
One person from the group posted a message on Facebook that said they had been stuck in Istanbul for about 20 hours.
A spokesperson from Tbilisi International Airport said Turkish Airlines flights were due to land in Tbilisi at 4.25am and 11am today however these flights were not conducted.
An Atlasjet flight from Istanbul was also expected to land in Tbilisi early this morning (3.40am) but this flight was also cancelled.
It is not known when the bad weather will pass and Istanbul Ataturk Airport will resume flights.
