President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko will visit Georgia and meet his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Margvelashvili in April.

The upcoming visit was announced by Minister of Agriculture and Food of Belarus Leonid Zayats at a meeting of the intergovernmental Belarusian-Georgian Commission on economic cooperation in Minsk.

"The meeting of the presidents of the two countries in Georgia will be in April," Zayats was quoted as saying in Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

The Minister invited a Georgian delegation to discuss steps to enhance bilateral economic cooperation.

He said the current level of relations couldn't satisfy either side, because it did not correspond to the potential of the countries.

Meanwhile, Georgia’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that preparations for Lukashenko’s visit were underway. The Ministry did not specify the date of the Belarussian official's visit.

"The visit was proposed by the Belarussian side and preparations for the visit have not been interrupted since then,” the Foreign Ministry’s press office said.
