The largest-ever catalogue of paintings of the Caucasus by 19th Century German artists is being unveiled in Tbilisi by Georgia’s Culture Ministry today.

German Painters and the Caucasus is a collection of works by German painters who travelled through the region for various missions before the advent of photography, making their paintings of the Caucasian landscapes and towns the oldest visual representations.

The works included in the album, most of which are previously unpublished, were selected from the archives of the Art Palace, Georgian National Museum, Zugdidi’s Dadiani Palace and private collections.

It is the largest collection of its kind, featuring world renowned artists including Friedrich Frisch (1813-1886) who made paintings of several Caucasian locations while travelling with Russia’s Emperor Alexander II. Other painters in the catalogue are Paul von Franken (1818-1884) and Franz Krüger (1797-1857).

The catalogue will be presented at the Culture Ministry today.

Some of the paintings that feature in the album were part of the Tbilisi Art Palace exhibition German Painters and the Caucasus, held at the Museum last July.
