For the first time in the city’s history, Georgia’s Black Sea coastal city Batumi is hosting the 2015 Biathle/Triathle World Championships.
More than 400 athletes aged 7-70 have come to Georgia while Georgia entered abour 70 spotesmen in the three-day competition that started yesterday.
The biathle involved swimming and running and the triathle consisted of running, swimming and laser pistol shooting.
After the first day of competition, Egypt was particularly successful with three gold medals, while the Czech Republic also won two golds and Georgia brought cheer to the excited local crowd with two silver medals.
"The first day of this inaugural event served as a powerful demonstration of passion and teamwork from a group of committed athletes,” stated the website of the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM), which along with the Georgian side was one of the organisers of the event.
President of UIPM Klaus Schormann said: "This is the first time we are here in Batumi and this competition will be a milestone for UIPM. We can already tell this by the number of athletes, supporters, families and the struggling for victory at this beautiful seaside.”
