During basic mountain training, Georgian instructors and cadets of the Sachkhere Mountain Training School saved the lives of two Polish tourists who fell into a crevasse on Mount Kazbek.
The husband and wife team were scaling Mount Kazbek, one of the country’s most spectacular mountains, when they both fell into the crevasse. They were hiking at 4,300m above sea level when they fell.
"At the beginning of August we went together in the mountain for trainings. We saw Polish tourists, which turned out to be a husband and wife, were following us,” head of the training school Ivane Cxadadze exclusively told Agenda.ge.
"Suddenly both of them fell in the cleft, which length was 25 metres. The husband managed to scramble up but the wife could not. Then our cadets helped her to safety,” he said.
Cxadadze posted a video on his Facebook page that showed how the cadets threw a rope into the cleft that the woman used to climb out.
The Sachkhere Mountain Training School trains Georgian cadets under the NATO Partnership for Peace (PFP) program.
Mount Kazbek in northeast Georgia has a total elevation of 5,047m and is the third highest peak in Georgia.
