The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) has praised Georgia for its agricultural policy recently adopted by the country.
FAO Director General Jose Graziano da Silva presented Georgia with an award for its achievements in the agricultural sector at a ceremony in Rome, Italy yesterday during the 39th session of the FAO conference.
Georgia’s Agriculture Minister Otar Danelia attended the ceremony at the FAO headquarters and received the award, the Ministry’s press office said.
FAO is an agency of the UN that leads international efforts to reduce poverty and defeat hunger.
One of the Millennium Development Goals adopted 15 years ago was to halve extreme poverty and hunger. Yesterday’s awards ceremony recognised the countries that achieved this goal.
"It’s very important that at the session Georgia received positive assessments for concrete agricultural projects,” Georgia’s Ambassador to Italy Kakha Sikharulidze said.
"It is also important that the Georgian delegation held bilateral meetings, where possible ways of boosting Georgia’s agriculture were discussed.”
The FAO 39th session will officially close on June 12.
