Georgia honours its police service

Police officers all over Georgia are being celebrated and honoured today by high officials and other citizens as the country celebrates Police Day.

May 31 is a holiday in Georgia dedicated to policemen. The day was marked with a public celebration in Kutaisi, Georgia’s second largest city in the country’s west.

Today’s celebration, organised by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, was attended by President Giorgi Margvelashvili, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, Government officials and Members of Parliament, as well as representatives of diplomatic corps accredited in Georgia and members of official delegations from Georgia's partner countries: Latvia, Lithuania, Germany, Armenia, Belarus, Turkey and Moldova.

Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri posthumously awarded two police officers, who were killed while on duty. They were awarded medals for their "courage and devotion" to their homeland. Minister Gomelauri presented medals to the families of the fallen men, Beka Margishvili and Giorgi Beruashvili, in their honour. 

Several other policemen also received medals for their bravery today.

President Margvelashvili and Prime Minister Garibashvili delivered speeches at today's celebration. Margvelashvili praised Minister Gomelauri’s work and thanked him for "all he has done” for the country’s and citizens’ safety.

PM Garibashvili said justice, legality and humanity were his team’s three priorities. He thanked police officers for their service and vowed he would always stand by them.
