Georgian lawmakers have elected two Members of Parliament (MPs) to fill vacant leadership roles in Parliament’s Euro-integration and Agricultural committees.

The positions have remained vacant for about a month after the former chairpersons of both committees were appointed by the Prime Minister of Georgia to Ministerial posts.

Today Georgia’s Parliament elected Republican Party member Levan Berdzenishvili as the new chairperson of the European Integration Committee of Parliament. He received 97 votes in favour.

This position was left vacant after Tinatin Khidasheli, also a member of the Republican Party, was appointed the country’s first female Minister of Defence in May.

Also today Georgian Dream coalition MP Gela Samkharauli was chosen as the new Agricultural Committee of Parliament. Samkharauli, who represents the Free Democrats party, gained 95 votes.

This position was left vacant after Gigla Agulashvili was chosen by Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili as the new Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection.

Meanwhile Berdzenishvili and Samkharauli both held deputy chairperson roles in their respective committees before they were appointed top jobs today.
