EU Statement confirms Georgia will sign Association Agreement before September

The European Union has expressed its desire to strengthen its relationship with Georgia following an emergency meeting discussing the Ukraine crisis. 

The announcement was made following yesterday’s meeting between European Council heads of state.

An eleven point document was introduced following the EU-Ukraine head of states Summit, held at the EU Council headquarters in Brussels. EU leaders spent most of the day involved in crisis talks surrounding Ukraine.

The statement read the European Union was eager to sign Association Agreements (AA) with Georgia in August.

"We confirm our aim to sign the Association Agreements, including the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Areas, which we initialed in Vilnius last November, no later than at the end of August 2014.”

Technically, Georgia initialed the AA with the EU at the Vilnius Eastern partnership Summit last November.

In December, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy announced the EU was eager to speed up the process of signing AA documents with Georgia and Moldova by August 2014.
