Georgia’s famous mountainous region Svaneti is the country’s cleanest region.

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia launched a nationwide competition to find the country’s cleanest region and after seven months, Svaneti was revealed as the winning, cleanest region.

The Clean Region competition also named Akhmeta Municipality in eastern Georgia as the Cleanest Municipality and Chitatskari, a small village in the Oniani district in Zugdidi Municipality as the Cleanest Village. The competition started in March and ended in September.

The seven-month competition was launched to raise public awareness and increase involvement in solid waste management improvement. Those behind the competition were the Ministry and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).

Georgia’s Minister of Environment Protection Elgudja Khokrishvili and head of SIDA Eva Smedberg named the competition winners last week.

The Clean Region competition was organised as part of the ‘Clean up Georgia’ project, which was organised by the Ministry, SIDA and other green organisations in Georgia.
