Almost three tonnes of liquid heroin seized in Georgia earlier this month belonged to the Taliban, says Georgia’s Interior Minister.
At today’s committee meeting in Parliament, Minister Aleksandre Tchikaidze said the Afghan-produced drugs found by Georgian police on July 14 were worth $400 million USD (700 million GEL).
Tchikaidze said the heroin was being transported to Europe and the money generated from the sale of the drugs would finance the Taliban terrorism group.
The Minister said this was "Europe’s largest ever” heroin seizure.
Georgian police caught two men, both Georgian citizens, at the Georgian border as they attempted to transport 2.79 tonnes of liquid heroin from Azerbaijan to Turkey earlier this month.
An investigation revealed the drugs were distributed into 93 30kg barrels. The Forensic Service said the drugs contained 80 percent pure heroin, which had a street value of $400 million USD.
