A special department is going to be established within the Ministry of Justice of Georgia to help bring Georgian legislation closer to European standards – an obligation the country must fulfill as requested by the Association Agreement (AA).

Justice Minister Tea Tsulukiani announced the new department would be created while speaking from Brussels yesterday, when Georgia signed the AA with the European Union (EU).

Tsulukiani said the new unit would work to bring Georgian legislation closer to European law.

"The main thing is to try our best now so we can timely receive all the benefits the Association Agreement offers."

She said some of the benefits the AA offered were to improve the level of personal freedom in Georgia and strengthen the country’s independence and align it with European standards.

The AA would also improve the level of security in Georgia and boost economic growth.

Minister Tsulukiani assumed many Georgia laws would need to be improved for the country to become closer to Europe, particularly the court system in Georgia.
