Fourteen candidates will run for the capital city’s Mayor

Fourteen people are in the race to be Mayor of Tbilisi city.

The candidates applied to the Central Election Commission (CEC) to be registered as a Mayoral candidate for the capital city in the upcoming local elections on June 15.

The deadline for submitting party lists and nominating Mayor/ Gamgebeli /single-mandate Majoritarian constituency candidates by the election subjects expired on Friday May 16. 

To date, the CEC have registered ten people who applied to challenge for the Tbilisi Mayoral role.

The CEC are expected to release its final decision whether it accepted or declined a further four candidates in the next few days.

Meanwhile for a candidate to win the spot as Tbilisi Mayor, the candidate must win more than 50 percent of votes in the first round to be declared an outright winner of the race without requiring a runoff.

The ten Tbilisi Mayor candidates currently registered by CEC are: 

  • Davit Narmania (Election Bloc "Georgian Dream”)
  • Mikheil Saluashvili (For the Name of the Lord- the Lord is our Truth)
  • Giorgi Laghidze (Future Georgia)
  • Asmat Tkabladze (Shalva Natelashvili-Georgian Labour Party)
  • Giorgi Gachechiladze (Giorgi Gachechiladze-Greens Party)
  • Roin Liparteliani (Labour Council of Georgia)
  • Dimitri Lortkipanidze (Nino Burjanadze-Unified Opposition)
  • Irakli Ghlonti (Irakli Ghlonti-Reformers)
  • Kakha Kukava (Election Bloc Non-Parliamentary Opposition (Kakha Kukava, Pikria Chikhradze)
  • Giorgi Liluashvili (Merab Kostava Society)

The four people who have applied as a Tbilisi Mayoral candidate but have not been registered by CEC are:

  • Nikanor Melia (United National movement) 
  • Irma Inashvili (Davit Tarkhan-Mouravi-Alliance of Patriots of Georgia)
  • Teimuraz Murvanidze (Salome Zourabichvili-The Way of Georgia)
  • Sergo Javakhidze (Self-Governance to People)
