The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the decision of that elected Georgia as a new member to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for 2014-2016 at a UN General Assembly meeting in New York, on Thursday.
The Assembly elected a total of 18 countries, including Georgia, as new members of ECOSOC. Russia, whose current term of membership expires at the end of this year, was re-elected to the council and the other two seats for Eastern European countries were taken by Georgia and Serbia.
Unlike other UN bodies, the period of ECOSOC membership is not limited by two terms and certain states remain members of the Council for decades. Russia has been a ECOSOC member since 1947.
The Economic and Social Council is one of the six main bodies of the United Nations. It is composed of representatives from 54 countries. It deals with international, economic, social, and environmental protection issues.
