President Margvelashvili payed tribute to the first President of Georgia

President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelasvhili laid a wreath at the tomb of the first president of Georgia Zviad Gamsakhurdia, in the Mtatsminda Pantheon today.  

Today is the 20th  anniversary of Gamsakhurdias death.Margvealshvili laid a wreath at his grave and paid tribute to his memory.

"I came here today with the people who were standing very firmly during the worst times in Georgias history and had to make a very difficult, often moral choice. I came here to ZviadGamsakhurdias grave and pay homage to his memory. We do not know the exact date of his death but according to available information, this happened during this period, Margvelashvili told journalists.

He said Zviad Gamsakhurdia and Merab Kostava were political leaders who brought amazing courage and national excitement to Georgia more than twenty years ago.

Gamsakhurdia is the only Georgian President to have died while formally in office.With the available information, he died on December 31, 1993 of unclear circumstances. A variety of reasons have been named for his death, among them suicide.
