Prisoners vote for the presidential elections

The Presidential Elections 2013 is the first elections in Georgia when prisons are not on high alert during the voting process. All media outlets who have registered at the Central Election Commission have the right to go into prisons and observe the election process any time during the day.

200 prisoners and detainees have already voted at Gldani #8 prison, by 14:00. There are 1,044 prisoners with the right to vote in this prison.

Under Georgian law, people who are in detention but havent been sentenced yet and all other prisoners who are sentenced to less than five years, are entitled to vote.

"The process is going on peacefully, no incident or excess have taken place so far, Mikeil Mukhadgverdeli, deputy chairman of Gldani prison polling station, said.

The prison staff members, who are on duty today, are also making their decision at the prison. By 14:00, 273 out of 323 people have already voted at the polling station that is meant only for the staff.

In total, 1,576 prisoners and detainees are entitled to vote at 10 precincts opened in different prisons all over the country.
