The 500 GEL compensation will be granted monthly to the families of the Defense Ministrys fallen servants of Georgia from 2014, according to the amendments in the law of State Compensation and Academy Scholarship.

The compensation will be donated to the families of ISAF mission military participants who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. It will also go to the families of the soldiers who died for territorial integrity of Georgia in May of 1998 and in August of 2004.

In 1998, almost 20 soldiers died in the Gali Region (breakaway Abkhazia) during the so called Six-Day War of Abkhazia. Two partisan groups Forest Brothers and White Legion launched armed rebellion against the Abkhazian de-facto government in Gali. After this conflict, more than 10,000 ethnic Georgians were forced by the Abkhazians to abandon their homes.

During the special operation in August of 2004, sixteen soldiers died in the Tskhinvali region due to Russian and Ossetian troops clashing against Georgian battalions. One of the fallen warriors Zaza Damenia, who saved the life of three soldiers, was given the rank of National Hero by the former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on 16 of August, 2013.

29 Georgian solders, who participated in ISAF missions, died in Afghanistan and five in Iraq since 2004.

According to this law, the compensation is for fallen solders parents, wives, underage children and family members with disabilities.
