The outgoing President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili used his exclusive right and granted citizenship to more than 400 people who wished for Georgian double citizenship.
According to Andro Barnovi, more than 4000 people applied to the President for obtaining the Georgian passport. "Because of the shortfall of time we could not managed to check all the peoples documents and send the data to the special bodies of the government, Barnovi noted.
The provision in the law allows the Georgian President to grant citizenship if such a move originates from "the state interests. The Ministry of Justice opposes president Saakashvili granting dual citizenship with simplified procedures.
