The President-elect Giorgi Margvelashvili in his November 10 interview with Russian TV Channel 1, said he hasnt decided yet if he will attend the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. However, he considers that "this is a good beginning not to create any political tension.
"We look at the Olympic Games with expectation that this emotion of sports enthusiasm will give start to any new relations not only in Russia, but also around the world, said Giorgi Margvelashvili. "We began with a very problematic point, when unfortunately, there were very tragic phenomena. Now we will try not to hurt to each other, we will try to speak about those problems which are solved today and to speak about prospects. And, the prospect has to return to a good-neighborhood point. What are Russian and Georgian interests, what are the interests of those people who suffer there?! And let's solve it.
The President-elect also stated, the Georgian government has already made its step to reduce tension with Russia.
"Russian business is active in Georgia, said Georgian President-elect. "And for them, all conditions are created in order that they developed the business. Besides, the Georgian products came back to the Russian market. Also it is very positive. But, we will still create a new format. We create opportunity for the Russian businessmen to invest in Georgia, as in the country which will have free trade relations with Europe".
Giorgi Margvelashvili emphasized that European integration is Georgias major aim and "it is also Russias interest.
"The stable country in the southern direction really creates opportunity for deepening of the relations and for stable development with the Russian Federation. He said.
Margvelashvilis 10-minutes interview with Russian TV was followed with controversial appraisals. The representative for the oppositional party, the United National Movement (UNM), Chiora Taktakishvili said that it was a shameless interview.
"Giorgi Margvelashvili didnt mention the word "occupation in his interview. It means that the he disrespects the countrys sovereignty. said Taktakishvili.
The Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Kakhi Kaladze, the former footballer of AC Milan, does not accept the UNMs arguments.
"There is no reason to ignore Sochi Olympic Games. But if we consider that its unsafe for our country to attend Winter Olympic Games, we would make a related decision. said Kaladze.
The Foreign Minister Maia Panjikidze said, "The government has not made a decision on the Georgian delegations presence at the Sochi Olympic Games yet.
