After the nine years of ruling, the UNM became opposition when it lost the parliamentary elections in 2012. The United National Movement was founded in 2001 by Mikheil Saakashvili and several Georgian politicians.

The current National flag of Georgia was established in the beginning of 2004, after the Rose Revolution. At that time it was the UNM flag and was widely used during the "Rose Revolution" of 2003. The old dark colored national flag of Georgia was replaced with the new white flag with one large cross in the middle and a smaller cross in each corner.
