While the attraction of underground clubbing venues in Tbilisi has been widely documented in the international media recently, a new feature by music review website Electronic Beats shows there is also a slew of talented music producers working in Georgia's capital.
In the well-known website's feature, Georgian producer Gacha Bakradze is asked to introduce eight of his favourite artists of the local scene to readers, along with some of their recent or best-known productions.
[As] we learned in the course of creating a photo tour of the city’s [...] clubs and nightlife venues, there’s a legion of house and techno heads soldiering just under the radar to make their scene one of the most fertile in the world", reads the story.
The roster of artists introduced by Bakradze is headlined by two of the pioneers of contemporary electronic productions in Georgia, Nika Machaidze and Natalia Beridze.
[Machaidze] started making electronic music in the mid ’90s in Tbilisi. There was no electricity, the country had little food and the economic situation was at an all-time low. His music captured the mood of this period", says Bakradze in his summary of the artist best known for his work released under the alias Nikakoi.
Bakradze also calls Beridze, popular through her alias TBA, as "no doubt one of the most interesting musicians in Georgia right now", while presenting the track Those Things, created in collaboration between the two artists.
Berlin-based emerging talent Ana Jikia, Tbilisi's SOU Festival-featured artist TeTe Noise and established local producer HVL all get a mention in Bakradze's list for Electronic Beats.
