A special performance by the Sukhishvilebi Georgian National Ballet during their 70th anniversary tour of the United States has captured the attention of many, including The Washington Post’s Sarah Kaufman.
The renowned Georgian folk dance company performed at the Lisner Auditorium in Washington on Tuesday and the show highlighted the troupe’s emotional performing manner, writes Kaufman in her review.
[The Auditorium] stage seemed barely big enough to contain the explosive energy of this troupe, whose folkloric dances are not at all the sort you can imagine doing in a community centre basement.”
Kaufman was also impressed by the variety of costumes and accessories that appeared on stage in quick succession.
[We] saw an array of fur hats, tall boots, belted wool tunics for the men. The women often wore slim-fitting gowns and veiled crowns, like medieval queens,” writes Kaufman.
The review also noted the variety of the dances in the program, noting "acrobatics and occasional swordfighting” could be appreciated along with "refined aesthetic” of more tranquil pieces.
