Since US President Barack Obama’s statement claiming Georgia and Ukraine are not on the path to becoming part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the disappointed small Caucasus state faces potential danger from its northern neighbour Russia.
Georgia’s sudden relationship change with NATO and its uncertain future to gain a Membership Action Plan (MAP) was highlighted by Will Cathcart in his article published on the Daily Beast website on March 27.
The patience and resolve of the Georgian people to continue pursue the alliance is frankly remarkable. Yet at the current rate, the US may soon find itself without a staunch ally in the South Caucasus and without access to Georgia’s strategic corridor, which together with Azerbaijan, connects the Caspian Sea and its oil reserves to the Black Sea and Europe.
