Radio Free Europe: ‘South Ossetian Opposition calls for referendum on Unification’

Is it possible South and North Ossetia-Alania will be united? This issue was reviewed by Radio Free Europe analyst Liz Fuller on January 8. This blog presents authors personal take on events in the region, following on from her work in the "RFE/RL Caucasus Report."

The question on unification was raised by the Ossetian political party Yedinaya Osetiya. The party, established in 2012, has appealed for the South Ossetian President, Leonid Tibilov to schedule a referendum on the unification of South and North Ossetia within the Russian Federation.

The author writes, this appeal has not generated any official reaction from either Tbilisi or Moscow, said the author.

"With very few exceptions, the international community continues to uphold Georgia's territorial integrity and therefore views both South Ossetia and the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia as integral parts of Georgia, even though the leaders of the two entities unequivocally reject the possibility of voluntarily submitting to Georgian rule,- Fuller wrote in the article.|/

As for the Georgian Government, Fuller considered that Georgia had already expressed its goodwill gesture when the State Ministry for Reintegration was named the Ministry for Reconciliation and Civic Equality.
