International laws state Abkhazia is part of Georgia but for more than 20 years, Georgia has had no influence on the breakaway region. Since the Russian-Georgian War in 2008, Russian troops and the FSB have controlled Abkhazia, stated Silvia Stöber in her article published in Neue Zürcher Zeitung on January 24, 2014.
In the upcoming days the Sochi Winter Olympic Games will start. One Olympic issue is Georgia and Russia do not share common interests. First Putin offered former President Mikheil Saakashvili cooperation in terms of security but it was neglected. Then Georgia’s new Government offered Putin support in counter-terrorism but Russia rejected the proposal.
The Georgian Government fears Putin could make them responsible if something unforseen happens at the Olympics. There is also concern that the situation might deteriorate after the Olympics because Georgia wants to expand its cooperation with the EU and NATO.|/
