Germany’s international broadcaster Deutsche Welle has published a thought-provoking piece on its website about the future of Abkhazia and how reliant it is on Russia.
The online article, published on August 23, analysed the current situation in Georgia’s breakaway region following the May resignation of its de-facto President and subsequent Presidential Elections, held on August 24.
Author Mikhail Bushuev stated since Abkhazia declared itself an independent state in 2008 following the Russia-Georgia war "there has been speculation whether (or when) Russia, which supports Abkhazia financially and has troops stationed there, will take over the territory – especially since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March”.
In the article Bushuev examined how likely this was to happen and explored the possible future direction of Georgia’s breakaway region.
