Zaal Udumashvili, former anchor and one of the key faces of private broadcaster Rustavi 2, was named as the mayoral candidate for the United National Movement (UNM) opposition, the party which ran Georgia in 2003-2012.
Before quitting his 25-year journalism career to move into politics, Udumashvili was deputy director general of Rustavi 2 and the channel’s main news presenter.
In his speech announcing his decision to run in the elections, Udumashvili said that he would be the candidate of "angry Tbilisites.” "I am a mayoral candidate of angry Tbilisites and I want to become the mayor of your city to turn Tbilisi into a city of happy people”, he said.
Udumashvili is divorced and has two children.
