A 20.5 km section of Georgia’s main east-west gas pipeline, constructed near the occupation line in Shida Kartli region in the central part of the country, will improve domestic supply as it becomes operational in the second half of this year, the Ministry of Economy said on Tuesday.
Giorgi Chikovani, the Director General of the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation, responsible for the construction of the pipeline, said the project for the Lekhura-Sveneti section was part of the 10-year transmission network development plan, aiming to replace outdated infrastructure.
Last year, we successfully completed the 31-km Natakhtari-Lekhura section [...] After the completion of the renovation works on the main gas pipeline, setting up of gas network infrastructure of our country will be significantly improved”, he said.

Zviad Zviadadze, a representative of the Georgian State Ministry for Reconciliation, said the project was “of utmost importance” for residents of areas along the administrative boundary line separating the Russian-occupied Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region from the Government-controlled territory.
Building our country and doing things every day sends a clear message to citizens living beyond the dividing line, showing them the difference between what is happening in our country and what is unfortunately happening in the occupied territories. For all of this, I want to express my gratitude to every person who is employed here”, Zviadadze said.
The works are underway near the village of Nadarbazevi, 50km from occupied Tskhinvali.
Georgian Economy Minister Levan Davitashvili visited the construction site along with Chikovani and Zviadadze earlier today.
