Georgian Deputy Interior Minister Aleksandre Darakhvelidze on Sunday discussed the importance of holding the October 26 parliamentary elections in “safe and free” environment with Eoghan Murphy, the head of the observation mission of the Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, the Ministry said.
At the meeting, Darakhvelidze briefed the members of the delegation of the observation mission on the “effective measures” undertaken by the body to “ensure holding the elections in a free, democratic and safe environment”.
He also highlighted the implemented and ongoing projects in the Ministry, aimed at personnel training so that police officers could “effectively fulfil their duties” in the electoral process, and expressed readiness to cooperate “proactively” and share relevant information with the election observation mission regarding possible violations in the process and the respective response of police to them.
The OSCE/ODIHR observation mission will assess the conduct of the elections for its compliance with OSCE commitments and other international obligations and standards for democratic elections, as well as with national legislation.
