Tbilisi City Hall provides financial assistance to World War II veterans, families of deceased for Victory Day celebrations

Tbilisi City Hall on Friday said it was providing a one-time financial assistance to World War II veterans and family members of deceased servicemembers to mark the 79th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany by Allied forces in 1945.

In preparations for marking the annual celebrations on May 9, the City Hall said the package included ₾2,000 ($749) for 37 veterans of the conflict, while 33 family members of those killed during the war would receive ₾1,000 ($374).

Up to 700,000 Georgians served as part of the Soviet armed forces in WWII, with nearly 400,000 killed in action, according to the numbers released by the State Service of Veterans Affairs of Georgia.

Of the servicemembers who took part in the conflict, 224,000 received various awards for their service, while 164 were granted the highest honour of the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
