Georgian people see every day how the “radical extremist” party, the United National Movement, has been turning into “some kind of comical organisation”, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said on Saturday.
Garibashvili noted all of the UNM’s “poor attempts” once again indicated that the party was a “bankrupt, discredited and marginalised radical force” and stressed their statements and actions were “meaningless”, the Government Administration said.
“We should do our work, serve our country [Georgia], our people [Georgians]. The most important thing for me is to resolve all existing issues [facing Georgia] and have a much stronger and better country than we have now", the Head of the Government said.
Irakli Kobakhidze, the Chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Tuesday said it "did not matter" whether the opposition United National Movement party would take part in Parliamentary work, following UNM Chair Levan Khabeishvili's announcement on Monday of the party's boycott of the legislative body.
Announcement of United National Movement, the largest opposition party in the country, to boycott Parliamentary work in response to Tbilisi City Court ruling on the imprisoned former President Mikheil Saakashvili is a part of the party’s “continuous efforts” to “hamper” Georgia’s European integration process, Anri Okhanashvili, the Chair of the Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee from the ruling Georgian Dream party, said on Tuesday.
Mikheil Sarjveladze, the Chair of the Georgian Parliament's Committee on Human Rights on Saturday said the confrontation in the opposition United National Movement party became so “critical” that any possibility for the party “to remain united could be excluded”.
Khatia Dekanoidze, the Chair of the United National Movement opposition party in the Parliament, on Tuesday announced her resignation from the post, in a development that follows the election of Levan Khabeishvili in the position of the overall Chair of the party.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili on Saturday said the country’s problem was “radicalisation from certain political groups”, for whom the democratic process was “unacceptable”, and not polarisation, as Georgian society was united around the “basic issues” including the country’s European integration.
