The Municipal Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, Belgium is hosting the first solo exhibition of Karlo Kacharava, one of Georgia’s most influential cultural figures of the late 20th century, as part of Europalia-Georgia cultural initiative, a biennial multidisciplinary event highlighting artistic and cultural facets of select countries in its editions.
The exhibition, titled Sentimental Traveller, showcases some of the artist’s most significant works, including paintings, works on paper and illustrated diaries, the Georgian Culture Ministry said on Monday.
On display until April 15, the event will allow European audiences a rare glimpse into the diverse range of Kacharava's works during the festival, which holds “special significance for the country’s European future”, the body said.
Europalia-Georgia will encompass approximately 60 large-scale events across Belgium and neighbouring countries, including two major exhibitions - on avant-garde in Georgia between 1900-1936, hosted at the Center of Fine Arts in Brussels, and on Georgia as a “Meeting Place”, organised at the Royal Museum of History and Art in Brussels.
The Ministry said the displays were showcasing “national treasures” over four months of their programmes.
The Europalia arts festival, a biennial multidisciplinary event highlighting artistic and cultural facets of select countries in its editions, will this year showcase Georgia through the country's tradition of polyphonic singing, remembrance of its traumatic historical events and the legacy of its avant-garde art scene in the first decades of the 20th century.
