Drivers accessing road sections designated as “special zones” across Georgia will be required to have winter tyres equipped on their vehicles between December 1 and March 1, the country’s Interior Ministry said on Friday.
The body explained the regulation was being introduced along with the potential added requirement of anti-skid chains on the tyres due to “meteorological conditions”.
Drivers failing to adhere to the requirements will be fined ₾100 ($37.11) and have five points on the driving licence deducted.
The bill was submitted by the Ministry and approved by the Parliament in its second reading, with 81 MPs voting in favour.
The Patrol Police Department of the Interior Ministry urged citizens to drive with appropriate winter tyres due to heavy snowfall and ice in the country’s regions, as well as follow the traffic safety rules and instructions of the Police officers, the Department announced on Friday.
The Roads Department of Georgia on Monday imposed traffic restrictions on several sections in the west and north of the country due to heavy snowfall.
Heavy snowfall across Georgia since January 27 has led to travel restrictions being placed on certain roads.
Drivers are advised to put snow tires on their vehicles or use anti-skin chains if they intend to travel along the roads in Georgia's north and east. Georgia’s Road Department have imposed restrictions on several roads due to heavy snow and ice.
Professionals of the Roads Department of Georgia are carrying out intensive road clearing works around the country to clear snowfall-affected roads and restore the traffic “as soon as possible”, the state body said on Sunday.
Heavy overnight snowfall has caused delays in train services and led to restrictions to road traffic in Georgia’s west, stopping trains and causing road sections to be closed to vehicles.
