Natia Turnava, the Acting Governor of the National Bank of Georgia, on Tuesday met heads of the Banking Association of Georgia and commercial banks operating in the country to discuss challenges in the financial sector and future plans.

Turnava said the meeting served to "better understand" the challenges the sector was facing.

This week we will have a meeting of the Financial Stability Committee where we will discuss various issues. Among them, on increasing the maturity of consumer loans. In this regard, we wanted to hear the opinions of commercial banks in advance”, she said.

The NBG Governor added the Georgian banking system was “quite strong, low-risk and resistant to various shocks”.

However, against the backdrop of increased geopolitical risks, we want to make sure once again that the banks are ready to deal with any external shocks”, Turnava said.

The President of the Banking Association, Aleksandre Dzneladze, said the goal of his office as well as the National Bank was to "minimise risks [and] external shocks and further develop" the country’s banking system.
