Georgia Barbarians, the rugby club of the American state, will visit Georgia on August 18th on a diplomatic mission after the governing bodies of the state and the country agreed to form closer ties earlier this year.
The mission will involve discussions and provide the foundation for future cooperation between the two institutions, visits by players, coaches and clubs, as well as talks about a Barbarians' visit following the World Cup that is scheduled to run between September 8-October 28 in France.
“This is such a tremendous opportunity for our Union. To witness, firsthand, how regions, and a nation of only 3 million people, built itself into an absolute rugby powerhouse”, Steve Mace, the President of Georgia Rugby Union said about the development of the sport in the country.
The US state body said its delegation would feature Pete Redmond, the Union Vice President and Barbarians Director, and Travis Spencer, the Union Secretary.
The development comes after the US state’s rugby team in January said it would lend its support to the national team of Georgia at the upcoming World Cup, while Georgia Barbarians were also invited to visit the country.
Plans for a cultural exchange have also been announced by the two institutions.
