Analysis shows Georgia’s territorial seas “completely free of pollution” - Greens Movement Chair

Chkhobadze said analysis of water samples had shown the pollution resulting from the incident “may never reach” Georgia's territorial waters, and added the risk of accelerated flow of toxic substances following the disintegration of the dam was also “not possible at this stage”. Nino Chkhobadze, the Chair of the Greens Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth - Georgia, on Thursday told the Georgian Public Broadcaster the country’s territorial seas were “completely free of pollution” and not under the threat of being contaminated with waters from the flooding of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine in June.

Chkhobadze said analysis of water samples had shown the pollution resulting from the incident “may never reach” Georgia's territorial waters, and added the risk of accelerated flow of toxic substances following the disintegration of the dam was also “not possible at this stage”.

She also noted the country’s National Environmental Agency had strengthened its monitoring of Black Sea waters, with monitoring of samples from the coast of the Adjara region.

Ramaz Mikeladze of the National Environmental Agency’s Department of Fishery, Aquaculture and Water Biodiversity told the Broadcaster there were “no notable occurrences” along the coastline that could endanger individuals and surrounding biological ecosystems.

Mikeladze said the entire coastline was being monitored for bacteriological pollution, noting samples were also being gathered from locations with no swimming areas.

He also said the Black Sea flow chart showed it was “absolutely absurd” to consider “any scenario” in which “bacteriologically polluted or other contaminated water” could enter the country's territorial waters and have an impact on the ongoing tourist season.
