The National Environment Agency of Georgia on Monday said it would monitor the quality of the Black Sea water at its nine stations once every 10 days to identify the main physical and chemical parameters including salinity, content of dissolved oxygen and biogenic elements.

The collected samples will be sent for analysis to the atmospheric air water and soil analysis laboratory of the National Environment Agency, which fully meets modern requirements and standards, the body added.

Last week the Agency announced water quality monitoring of the Black Sea had shown it to be “within the norm” along the coastline.

The Agency added it would further improve monitoring systems in accordance with the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive, and added it had purchased modern laboratory equipment to help detect “specific pollutants with high accuracy”.

The initiative comes after concerns about the quality of the Black Sea waters after the collapse of the Nova Kakhovka dam in Ukraine earlier this month led to contaminated waters flowing into the Sea.
