Rati Ionatamishvili, a member of the Georgian Parliament from the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said the United States President’s adviser had proposed Georgia to become a member of the US President’s international forum of disabled persons.

Ionatamishvili highlighted the significance of this proposal for Georgia and emphasised the country’s participation in the 16th Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which was attended by “all world-class decision-makers with the influence on the policy of people with disabilities”.

In his comments to the local media, the MP said Georgia, for the first time in 16 years, was one of the speakers at the panel discussion of the Session, organised by the European Parliament. The reforms carried out by the country’s legislative body in terms of strengthening the rights of persons with disabilities were “positively evaluated” by the officials, he added.

The organisers of the panel discussion, including MEPs, highlighted the importance of Georgia’s participation in this format of meeting in the process of the country’s rapprochement with the European Union.
