Irakli Kadagishvili, the Chair of the Rules and Procedural Issues Committee of the Parliament of Georgia, on Thursday said the country’s authorities were in “constant legal battle” to ensure human rights protection in the Russian-occupied territories of the country.

Kadagishvili’s comment followed the decision of the European Court of Human Rights to accept Georgia’s application against Russia on alleged deterioration of the human rights situation along the administrative boundary line between the Government-controlled territory and its Russian-occupied territories as admissible on Thursday.

In his remarks over the matter, Kadagishvili noted the latest lawsuit filed in the ECHR was a part of the Government’s legal battle.

There are direct violations [in the Russian-occupied territories], such as bans on education in the mother tongue, imposition of restrictions on people being able to cross [the boundary] for treatment [in the Government-controlled territory], [and] illegal detentions of people [along the administrative line]”, the Parliament official said.

“This lawsuit is also a constituent part of the lawsuits and the legal battle that the Georgian authorities achieved through the ECHR for the interests of Georgia. We have objective evidence”, Kadagishvili concluded.

Georgian Justice Minister Rati Bregadze last year said the country had won all 3,300 complaints filed with the ECHR against Georgia following the 2008 war with Russia over potential violations and crimes committed during the conflict.
