The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs on Saturday confirmed it had launched an investigation following reports of an assault on Giorgi Kandelaki, a member of the European Georgia - Movement for Liberty party.
The confirmation followed reports by Kandelaki, stating he was physically assaulted on Friday in the vicinity of the Liberty metro station after he turned off Russian music.
The investigation has been launched into charges of violence, punishable by a fine or community service for a term of 120 to 180 hours, house arrest for a term of six months to two years, or imprisonment for a term of up to one year, the Ministry told the local media outlet Interpressnews.
