Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a "continuation of the pattern" used by the Kremlin in Georgia in 2008, Ambassador Kakha Imnadze, the Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations, said on Tuesday in a UN Security Council address.

Making the remark in his introductory statements in a session for the open debate on Women and Peace and Security: Economic Inclusion Through Partnerships, Imnadze condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and highlighted the particular suffering of women and children in this unprovoked and unjustified war.

He also stressed Russia’s indiscriminate attacks on civilian infrastructure, violation of agreements on humanitarian corridors, and overall grave breaches of international law, including human rights law, international humanitarian law and UN Charter.

The Permanent Representative pointed out Russia’s aggression in Ukraine was a "continuation of the same pattern" used in Georgia in 2008 and emphasized the breach of the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008 by Russia, continued occupation of the Georgian territories and so-called 'borderisation' activities along the occupation line.

Imnadze highlighted as a high priority of the Government of Georgia the engagement of women in the peace process and maintaining the issues of the conflict-affected women on the agenda of the Geneva International Discussions.

He also pointed out the Government's efforts to empower conflict-affected women were impeded by the ongoing occupation of the Georgian territories by Russia, where fundamental human rights violations are observed regularly.

In his statement, the Ambassador called on Russia to immediately cease military actions in Ukraine, withdraw forces and reverse illegal decisions on the status of Ukraine’s territories and to do the same with regard to the occupied territories of Georgia.
