Ruling Georgian Dream party chair Irakli Kobakhidze on Tuesday said the Georgian territory and its financial institutions would not be used in circumvention of international sanctions imposed on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
In no way will Georgia be used as a tool to bypass the sanctions. It is of primary importance for Georgian Dream authorities, and we will follow this principle to the end”, Kobakhidze said.
The official stressed “no breach” of international sanctions against Russia had been observed in Georgia since the beginning of hostilities in Ukraine in late February.
If we decide that any move can lead to certain violations and circumvention of sanctions, the government will react appropriately”, the official added.
Several Ukrainian officials, as well as a part of the domestic Georgian opposition have accused Georgian authorities of “ensuring aid” to Russia to circumvent the sanctions, without providing specific evidence.
Responding to the “groundless and insulting allegations”, the Georgian government has accused the “radical part” of the domestic opposition and people “affiliated to them” in the Ukrainian government of working to “drag Georgia into the war” through a forceful change of the country’s current political leadership.
