Irakli Kobakhidze, the chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, on Wednesday said “any war where Georgians and Abkhazians, and Georgians and Ossetians face each other” with weapons again should not be allowed.
When it comes to the deoccupation [of the country’s Russian-occupied regions], values are also important here, and one of the values for us should be the restoration of the relations that were artificially interrupted between Georgians and Abkhazians, Georgians and Ossetians”, Kobakhidze said in reference to Russian involvement in the two conflicts.
“We must be careful about this, and therefore, we must not allow any war where Georgians and Abkhazians, and Georgians and Ossetians once again confront each other with weapons in their hands”, Kobakhidze said.
In his remarks over the matter, the GD official stressed “if we theoretically imagine” Georgians going to war to restore control in the Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions, the conflict could be a “fratricidal war”, which he said the Georgian government would not allow.
If we theoretically assume that we have to go to war in Tskhinvali, Abkhazia - you enter into a war not only with the Russian occupying forces, but also with Abkhazians and Ossetians, which we went through 30 years ago. This can easily be called a fratricidal war, which we cannot allow”, he concluded.
