Convicts and defendants in Georgia will be able to study remotely at authorised universities in the country, the Ministry of Justice announced on Thursday.
The project will enable individuals in penitentiary institutions to receive remote education in both bachelor’s and master’s level programmes.
The state body called the introduction of e-learning methods and access to higher education “an important step” in ensuring the rights of convicts to education, as well as their socialisation.
The Justice and Education ministries signed a memorandum of understanding for the project at the Penitentiary Institution No. 5, the only facility for female inmates in Georgia.
