Police have arrested nine individuals on charges of “membership in the criminal underworld” and using criminal authorities to settle a financial dispute, the Ministry of Internal Affairs said on Thursday.
The offenders, identified only through their initials, had been mediating between criminal authorities abroad and individuals involved in a financial dispute, the state body said.
In the dealings, the authorities had made rulings according to “criminal traditions” and forced one of the disputing sides to pay a certain amount of money in their favour, in addition to forcing a payment to another individual, the Ministry said, adding a condition had also been made to force a fine in case of overdue payment.
Law enforcers seized computer equipment and mobile phones of the offenders during a search.
The crime is punishable by three to 15 years in prison.
